How to jade-roll?

Writer: Kimberley IshizukaKimberley Ishizuka

Jade rolling , or traditionally known as 刮痧 (gua sha) amongst the Chinese - often translated to “scraping” in English had me flinching. Why was I (and majority of Chinese people I know) just now hearing about these “ancient Chinese beauty tools,” as they’re being called online?

Contrary to the traditional methods I'm familiar with have also undergone evolution for social media. My childhood version of Gua Sha involved spoons, loose change, and copious amounts of Tiger Balm, which is significantly different from what's all over my feeds now. Was facial gua sha—which has been put through the woo-woo wellness spin cycle, really the chosen beauty routine of ancient Chinese princesses—another piece of internet lore?

While I can think of plenty of Instagram-backed products that amount to little more than empty hype, dermatologists and aestheticians agree that these tools deliver legitimate skin benefits. The problem is, you need to know how to use jade rollers correctly in order to maximize their benefits.

This is your definitive go-to guide for maximizing the use of your jade roller. Don’t have one yet?

How Does Jade Rolling / Gua Sha Work?

The phrase to remember here is "lymphatic drainage," a form of massage that pushes fluids to your lymph nodes, which subsequently process and filter them out of your system, as a natural detox process. Performing this technique consistently, it's supposed to deliver de-puffing, glow-boosting benefits as well as helping to sculpt a lifted, contoured look.

Beauty Inbox Tips:

  • Place your jade roller in the freezer to maximise its de-puffing effects.

  • Always remember to start your routine with a freshly-cleansed face and to always wash your roller with a cleanser to prevent acne-causing bacteria.

  • ONE DIRECTION ONLY! Always lift and place your roller at the starting point instead of rolling backward.
